
From Research to Real Production: How PEATLESS Is Validating Peat Alternatives for Mushroom Cultivation
Finding alternative materials to peat is only the first step. The real challenge begins when those alternatives need to prove that they can perform consistently under cultivation conditions that growers can trust.
Within the PEATLESS project, the work carried out by CTICH (La Rioja Mushroom Research and Technology Centre) is now entering a decisive phase: validating whether reduced-peat and peat-free casing mixtures can move beyond the laboratory and become realistic solutions for the mushroom sector.
Why validation matters
In mushroom cultivation, casing materials are far more than a simple covering layer. Their physical behaviour directly influences key stages of production, particularly during fructification.
For growers, this means that any alternative to peat must demonstrate much more than environmental value. It also needs to provide:
- Stable moisture management
- Reliable irrigation performance
- Consistent mycelium development
- Predictable crop behaviour
Even small variations in the structure or water retention capacity of a casing material can affect production results.
This is why the validation phase is so important. The objective is not only to reduce peat use, but to determine whether alternative materials can realistically support commercial cultivation requirements.
Before looking at how alternative casing materials are being validated, it is important to understand the role that the casing layer plays in mushroom cultivation.

Testing alternatives under cultivation conditions
Following the initial screening and material selection process presented in the first part of this series, CTICH designed several alternative casing formulations using materials that fulfilled the basic technical requirements for mushroom cultivation.
These mixtures are currently being evaluated under controlled conditions at the CTICH facilities. In total, 12 alternative formulations are being tested and compared against a control composed entirely of peat.
The trials focus on how the mixtures behave throughout the cultivation process, paying particular attention to:
- Moisture retention stability
- Irrigation needs and management
- Mycelium colonisation
- Fructification development
This phase allows researchers to observe how each mixture performs over time and whether its behaviour remains stable during the most sensitive stages of production.
Building confidence in new materials
One of the biggest barriers to reducing peat use in horticulture is uncertainty.
Growers need evidence that alternative materials can perform reliably before introducing changes into production systems that depend heavily on consistency and yield stability.
For this reason, the PEATLESS approach combines environmental objectives with practical validation. Rather than proposing theoretical alternatives alone, the project focuses on generating real cultivation data that can support decision-making within the sector.

The next step: semi-commercial trials
The most promising formulations identified during laboratory testing will advance to a new stage of validation in the CTICH cultivation rooms.
At least five alternative mixtures are expected to enter this semi-commercial phase, where they will be tested under conditions much closer to real production environments.
This stage will make it possible to evaluate aspects that cannot be fully assessed at laboratory scale, including:
- Operational handling
- Irrigation behaviour at larger scale
- Crop consistency across production cycles
- Overall feasibility for growers
Moving into semi-commercial trials represents a major step toward understanding whether these solutions can realistically support the transition to reduced-peat mushroom cultivation.
Supporting the transition toward lower-peat cultivation
Reducing dependence on peat in mushroom production requires more than identifying new raw materials. It requires solutions that growers can understand, test and eventually integrate into existing cultivation systems with confidence.
Through its validation work, CTICH is helping bridge the gap between research and practical application — generating the knowledge needed to support a more sustainable and technically viable future for the sector.
Within the broader objectives of the PEATLESS project, this work contributes to making low-peat cultivation not only possible, but increasingly achievable in real production contexts.
